The castle of Serralunga d'Alba
Castle of Serralunga (Castello di Serralunga)
On the crest of the hill overlooking the town stands Serralunga Castle. The castle, which once belonged to the Falletti of Barolo, is now the property of the state. The castle stands 415 meters above sea level. One is immediately struck by the steepness and height of its Gothic architechture. In the era of Bomifacio del Vasto’s descendants, a tower fortified it.

In 1340, the tower was demolished around when the estate became the property of the Falletti, an important noble family of the Langhe. Pietrino Falletti immediately began construction on a manor, which was to be finished by his son Gioffredo II. The compact fortification contains two asymmetrical towers, one cylindrical and one square, and a turret roof. From the time of its construction up to the present day, very few alterations have been made. Fortunately, the castle suffered no serious damage from battle. Fascias with arches characterize the brick facades. Aside from the top of the castle, there are few windows, double windows or mullioned windows. The gateway consists of a simple gate, driven by a winch, which would be closed after the drawbridge was raised. The large moat is today no longer visible. Inside, several large fireplaces and wooden ceilings are the only evidence remaining of the original furnishings.
The castle was subject to a massive restoration around 1950.
